Umbrella insurance doesn’t take the place of travel insurance. However, it does cover some aspects of international travel that a regular travel insurance policy doesn’t cover.
How Does Umbrella Insurance Work?
Umbrella insurance extends liability coverage for an underlying policy, such as homeowner’s insurance, auto insurance, or commercial liability insurance. This means that it not only increases liability limits by paying out compensation for claims that exceed the underlying policy limits, but also covers claims that occur off one’s property. For instance, if you own property abroad and a visiting relative slips on the steps, your umbrella insurance may pick up the tab. The same point holds true if you stay at an Airbnb outside the country and are accused of damaging valuables in the short-term rental. Umbrella insurance may also cover damage caused by a rental vehicle accident.
Bear in mind that the amount and type of protection you get depend on the terms and conditions of the underlying policy. Read it and your umbrella insurance policy’s terms and conditions carefully to ensure there are no unpleasant surprises down the line. You’ll also want to bear in mind that your umbrella insurance coverage for international travel only covers trips between 30 and 90 days in length (depending on the policy), and it won’t cover business trips or a move abroad.
