Bad news, your Great Aunt Gertie died. Good news, she was 98 years old, and it all happened very quietly in her sleep. Bad news, the same cannot be said of the three people in her car at the time. Good news, you’re listed as a beneficiary on her life insurance policy! Now what?
Collecting on the Insurance
Preferably, someone who claims you on their life insurance would let you know well in advance. But, stuff happens. Maybe Great Aunt Gertie’s memory was slippery. Maybe it wasn’t Great Aunt Gertie but Big Brother Jake who got hit by a bus right after leaving the insurance agency office. You may have to check the deceased’s filing cabinet, computer, home safe or any other place they might keep important documents. Get in touch with any attorneys or financial professionals they may have worked with. When you have the policy information you need, you must directly contact the insurance company. The provider will need to confirm both the existence of the policy and the death of the policyholder. They will want to know your relationship to the policyholder. You may be asked to submit a claims form as well as a copy of the policyholder’s death certificate plus their social security number. Have your ID ready. Have at the ready other supporting information such as name of the insurance agent, type of policy, the date it was issued, or the policy number. Before the worst happens, discuss things with someone you think might list you as a beneficiary.
